Bullhead Trail Weekday Closures Continue Through Nov. 19

Bullhead Trail remains closed four days a week through Nov. 19 as Great Smoky Mountains National Park continues a major rehabilitation project on the route to Mount LeConte.

The closure applies Mondays through Thursdays, excluding federal holidays. The trail is generally available Fridays through Sundays, although hikers should still check current park alerts before beginning a trip.

Bullhead is one of the strenuous routes connecting the Rainbow Falls area with Mount LeConte. Its exposed ridges, sustained climbing and long mileage make it a full-day undertaking for many hikers even when the trail is open.

The weekday schedule gives trail crews room to move materials, repair the tread and complete other work without mixing construction operations with visitor traffic. Friends of the Smokies is supporting the rehabilitation in partnership with the National Park Service.

Hikers planning a Mount LeConte trip during the closure should not treat a Monday-through-Thursday Bullhead itinerary as available simply because the trailhead area is accessible. Rainbow Falls Trail shares the same general trailhead area and may offer a different route, but visitors need to review distance, elevation and current conditions before changing plans.

The closure began in May and remains an active visitor advisory rather than a new shutdown. Its late-November end date means it will affect much of the fall hiking season, including weeks when cooler temperatures and changing leaves draw more hikers to the mountain.

The park can adjust trail access for weather, emergency response or construction needs. Current alerts should be checked on the day of a hike, especially for a high-elevation route where conditions can differ sharply from Gatlinburg.
